AVOCADO INNOVATION

Proyecto innovador subvencionado por el Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación a través del PNDR

(Programa Nacional de Desarrollo Rural 2014-2020). (https://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/index_es)

From the analysis, diagnosis and definition of the scope of the project, the general and specific objectives have been set. With all this, and in order to achieve the expected results, a series of activities have been defined. These activities take place in Andalusia (Cádiz and Málaga), C. Valenciana (Castellón, Valencia and Alicante) and in the Canary Islands.

In Andalusia, it operates in two areas, in Malaga in a 600ha region, directly on 20 plots of an average size of 10ha and owned by 20 farmers, and in Cádiz, in a 150ha area of cultivation, and directly on 5 properties. In the Valencian Community, action is taken in Valencia on two areas, due to the smaller extension of cultivation. These two areas are La Safor, including the border area of Corbera and Llaurí, and the area of Les Valls de Morvedre, including the aforementioned small area of Almenara (Castellón).

In each area, 50ha of avocado is operated. In addition to these plots, we act with transfer actions and transferring the impact made with the innovations in these plots, on a much larger population of farmers. It also acts on the Sinyent farm, owned by AVA and the Research and Development Center of this organization, serving as a place of natural propagation for its associate members.

The second area of the Valencian Community is in the province of Alicante, in Callosa d’en Sarria, in a 150ha area of influence and directly on a 2ha plot.

The transfer of innovation occurs cascade and organically. On the one hand, knowledge is transferred to Agronomists of the agricultural organizations ASAJA-Málaga, Asaja-Cádiz, and AVA, who will participate in the transfer to farmers – owners of the pilot plots and coordinated by the IHSM La Mayora-CSIC -UMA, and with the collaboration of ICIA. At the same time, these farmers will connect their experience organically with the rest of the farmers in the community, and it will make it easier for a larger group of farmers to participate in the direct transfer.

In order for the social, environmental and economic aspects of the communities that are inserted in the avocado production area to be added to the process, joint actions are carried out with the main agents, and innovation sessions.

In the same way, other transfer and dissemination actions are essential in the project, facilitating this by distributing an avocado production manual, carrying out a study on the social, economic and environmental impact of this work, and with the consolidation of the Operational Innovation Group as the seed of a continuous observatory of the avocado situation, in addition to acting as a neutral actor for the dissemination of new technological and cultural findings for the improvement of avocado production and its commercialization. All this will be followed up in the definition of a participatory website, in which the news of the project as well as its main conclusions can be consulted in real time.
